Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Paint

Have you ever wanted to paint trim, a door, cabinets… or anything really… and NOT have brush marks???

Do you ever wonder… “Do I really need to spray the paint to get a smooth factory-like finish?”

I have wondered that a lot. And tried many products that have not impressed me.

While it is not impossible to spray some surfaces;  like an entry door or cabinet doors, especially if you can remove them from the hinges and paint them in an actual paint booth… it’s not always easy or practical for the average person to do.

You can always hire me, Bright Sky Painting, and we will provide our professional painting services, giving you a great finished product no matter what you need painted.

But not everyone likes to hire contractors for every little project. Many people are fantastic DIY’ers and truly LIKE and WANT to do the work themselves. Which brings me to my reason for writing this…

I want to give a raving review of a product I recently used. Well, to be honest, the first time I used it was on some base and window trim a few years ago. I was very happy with the product, but didn’t have a platform set up to rave about it.

Over the past weekend I used Emerald Urethane Trim Paint on my metal storm door. I love that it’s an Interior/Exterior product. Very versatile and durable for areas that see a lot of traffic /abuse.

I toyed with using a spray gun to apply the paint, but I didn’t. It may have been a faster application process, but that didn’t sell me. I was afraid of overspray and didn’t want to remove the door from the frame. Even if I did remove the door, I still would have the frame to spray which would leave the inside of my house vulnerable.

I know, I know… I could have sprayed and protected everything from the dreaded overspray… but I didn’t. I do enjoy painting with a brush, no matter the time it takes to complete the project.

The guys that work for me are much better and if that perfect factory-finish is desired, they will take all precautions to spray the surface, giving the customer what they want. That’s why I believe they are the absolute best!

But… this is me for my home. And a great opportunity to give this product another try!!!

The key to getting a smooth finish without brush marks is to NOT overwork the product. By this I mean get some on your brush, brush it on (3 strokes at most) and move on. Once the product hits the air, it will begin the drying process and that’s when brush marks show.

So… even if you see a thin spot… LEAVE IT!! Seriously… DON’T BRUSH IT MORE!!! You will put another coat on and cover that spot later. Trust me.

I do think the first coat dried and laid out nicer than the second coat, but in the end the entire door looks beautiful!! I applied the second coat pretty thick and did have a few drips I had to try to smooth out. Not a good idea since I said to NOT brush over it again, so be aware of any areas that seem they may run/drip. Go thin/ sparingly in these areas. I couldn’t get a better finish with any other product that I’ve tried in the past.

I will DEFINITELY use this product again. It’s a rather pricey product, but it’s worth the extra money spent.

Good luck with your project! Reach out to me with any questions and to tell me about how your project turned out. I hope you have the same (or better) experience as I did.
